But we should and are [morally] obligated [as debtors] always to give thanks to God for you, believers beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through the sanctifying work of the Spirit [that sets you apart for God’s purpose] and by your faith in the truth [of God’s word that leads you to spiritual maturity]. It was to this end that He called you through our gospel [the good news of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection], so that you may obtain and share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold [tightly] to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting comfort and encouragement and the good [well-founded] hope [of salvation] by His grace, comfort and encourage and strengthen your hearts [keeping them steadfast and on course] in every good work and word. 2 Thess. 2:13-17
It is indeed a special privilege to be chosen by God from among the billions of people on earth to be among His own people that will inherit His kingdom. At the time He drew you to Himself, you were not better than those that are still shunning Him; those that are treating His Holy name as if it is of no consequence. You can now appreciate the more what Apostle Paul meant when He said in Ephesians 2:8; For it is by grace [God’s remarkable compassion and favor drawing you to Christ] that you have been saved [actually delivered from judgment and given eternal life] through faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [not through your own effort], but it is the [undeserved, gracious] gift of God.
If you wonder why God has chosen you while some other persons are still wallowing in sin, ignorance and unbelief, know that from the beginning, God marked you as His own, and at an appointed time, He called you to Himself. Apostle Paul explains this better: “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover, whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified” (Romans 8:29-30).
The only reason God chose you is because He loves you. But He also loves the billions of others that are yet to surrender to Him. He loves them so much that He gave the life of His only begotten son for their sake. To return His love, pray ceaselessly that those He loves equally, who are still held back from receiving Jesus as Lord and Saviour will receive the light of salvation and surrender to the Lord.
Lord, I will never take it for granted that you laid down your life and died that I may live. The life I live now I dedicate to bringing others to you; that they may partake of your abundant love and treasure.
Father I thank you for the great plan and future you prepared for me even before I was formed in my mother’s womb. I align to your will and also pray that your will shall be done in the lives of men and in the Nations of the earth.
