HISTORY BELONGS TO THE INTERCESSORS

In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans;

In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.

And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:

And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;

We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:

Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.

O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.

To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;

Neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

– Daniel 9:1-10

History makers are remembered by the footsteps they leave on the sands of time. Those that made truly great impacts often acknowledged that they were mere vessels through whom the Greater One in them – the Spirit of God – did the works. But the Spirit of God does not intervene until He has been called into the scenario by people who pray – the intercessors. This is the basis of the gripping statement by Walter Wink: “The unexpected becomes suddenly possible, because God’s people on earth have invoked heaven – the home of the possibilities, and have been heard. What happens next happens because people prayed. The message is clear: History belongs to the intercessors.”

Do you want to be a history maker?  Most people do. But you don’t have to wait until you climb upon the center stage of politics or business before you do things that will shape the future. Upon your knees, you can exert an overwhelming push that will redirect the course of individuals, organizations leaders, families, communities and nations.

When Daniel discovered from the books that the seventy years of exile prophesied by Jeremiah had been completed, this is how he responded: “And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: and I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession…”  (Daniel 9:3-4).

Daniel’s prayer shaped the history of Israel. So will you do for your nation if you stand firmly as an intercessor.

PRAYER:

  • Pray that you be clothed and overshadowed with the spirit of intercession.
  • Pray that God will empower members, leaders of families, communities, states and nations to pray.

CONFESSION: The Lord answers when I call. Through prayer, I will provide answers to the burdens of my generation.
